The forestry industry in South Africa is a major contributor to the national economy. Commercial plantations cover an area of about 1, 2 million hectares. The industry produces approximately 18.9 million m3 (cubic meters) of commercial roundwood worth about R6, 7 billion and a gross contribution to GDP of R20, 4 billion. Commercial plantation are mainly concentrated in Mpumalanga (519 513 ha), KwaZulu Natal (504 393 ha), Limpopo (49668 ha), Eastern Cape (141 819 ha) and Western Cape (59 171 ha).
