In 1979 when the Dendrological Foundation was founded, the terms "Dendrology" and "Dendrologist" were fairly unknown in South Africa. And yet there was a need for the creation of a competent body who would serve the particular requirements of a dendrological community in Southern Africa. Established in 1997 by the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), UNFF represents an international forest policy dialogue. Its concerned mainly focus on international arrangements and mechanisms to promote the management, conservation and sustainable development of all forest types.

WESSA is one of the leading environmental organisations in South Africa and their mission is to promote public participation in caring for the Earth. WESSA has adopted an holistic approach to environmental issues and is involved in a wide range of projects and initiatives.

IUCN is the largest and most important environmental knowledge network. It conducts conservation science policy research around the world and assists with the preparation and implementation of national conservation and biodiversity strategies

WWF is an organization dedicated to the prevention of degradation of natural environment and sustainable use of natural resources. Several programmes have been established in South Africa which will cover climate change and toxins, species and forests.
