FORESTRY DEVELOPMENT

Managing forests with people to improve their quality of life

The new Forestry vision states that “Forests are managed for people, we need to create an enabling environment for economic and social development through sustainable forestry, especially at the local level”.

In line with the vision the Forestry Development was established and is primarily responsible for the pro-poor forestry programme of the Department of Water Affairs and Forestry. This includes a service to support the sustainable use of forests and forest resources to serve the livelihoods of poor, rural and marginalised urban and rural communities. This is achieved through access to forest resources at community level and through enterprise development including the following:

Development of norms and standards, best practice guidelines and methods to ensure participatory forest management (PFM) and Forest Enterprise Development (FED)

Development of programmes for use of forests and forest resources by local communities and households, focusing on the livelihoods of poor and marginalised communities

Development of policies, strategies and programmes for the promotion of enterprise development using forest resources

Promotion of the development of local institutional arrangements to support enterprise development and household use of forest resources

Monitoring and evaluation and evaluate the use of forest resources by poor households and rural communities.
